About Rift & Reef

What this site is

Rift & Reef is a travel guide to Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Rwanda, from the savannas and forests of the Rift Valley to the reefs and beaches of the Indian Ocean coast. We publish practical, plain-language guides to the parks, the cities you’ll pass through and the decisions that come up when you plan a trip: when to go, what it costs, how to get there and what to skip.

The guides are written for people planning their first or their fifth trip, from North America, Europe, East Asia and the Middle East, and they assume you’ll compare us with other sources. That’s fine. We’d rather you book with good information than with pressure.

How we make money

We earn revenue in two ways, and we say so openly.

Trips arranged with our operating partner. If you send us a trip enquiry, we plan and price it, and the safari is run by East Africa Trails, a locally operated company. That’s how we earn most of our income.

Affiliate links. Some links on this site go to partners such as tour and activity marketplaces, accommodation sites, eSIM providers, insurers and flight search tools. If you book through one of those links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Our affiliate disclosure explains this in full.

Neither arrangement changes what we write. If a park isn’t worth a long drive, we say so. If a permit is overpriced for what it offers, we say that too.

How we write and check facts

• Prices and rules come from official sources where possible: national park authorities, immigration departments and permit offices. We name them in the text and link to them when we can.
• We show a date on time-sensitive information. Fees and entry rules change, and where we can’t be sure, we say “as of September 2026” and tell you to confirm.
• We recheck regularly. Each guide shows when it was last updated.
• We correct mistakes. If you spot something wrong or out of date, please tell us using the contact details below, and we’ll fix it and update the date.

What we don’t do

We don’t publish fake reviews, invent traveller quotes or pretend to have visited every place we describe. Where we haven’t been somewhere ourselves, the guide draws on official sources and published research, and we try to say so.
