A small park with a lot of habitats
Lake Manyara is a slim strip of land squeezed between the towering Rift Valley escarpment and a shallow alkaline lake. Within that narrow space, the habitat shifts quickly. You’ll drive through mahogany and fig forest, open acacia woodland, floodplains and reed beds before reaching the lakeshore.
At the entrance, a groundwater forest fed by springs from the escarpment supports large troops of baboons and blue monkeys. It’s an unusual start to a safari: you drive under a canopy of trees and often see monkeys and elephants within minutes.
Tree-climbing lions and other wildlife
The park’s most famous animals are its tree-climbing lions. Some prides rest on branches during the day, probably to escape biting flies and the ground heat. Sightings aren’t guaranteed, so treat one as a bonus.
Elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and wildebeest are common. Hippos wallow in the pools near the lake, and the shore attracts pelicans, storks and, when conditions are right, flamingos. Bird numbers peak between November and April, when migrant species arrive.
When to go
The dry season from June to October is easier for driving and wildlife viewing. From November to April, the park is greener and bird numbers rise. Heavy rains from March to May can affect the roads and the lake’s edge. As the park is small, a visit is usually short whatever the season.
Getting there
Lake Manyara is about two hours by road from Arusha and one hour from Karatu. It’s close to the Rift Valley escarpment, and the road up to the escarpment gives views over the lake. Most visitors include it between Tarangire and Ngorongoro.

TANAPA charges non-resident adults about US$59 per 24 hours including VAT (as of September 2026). Lodges near Lake Manyara range from budget campsites in Mto wa Mbu to luxury lodges on the escarpment with panoramic views. Many visitors stay in Karatu and visit the park as a day trip.
What you might want to skip
If you have limited time and want to see big game in large numbers, spend it in Tarangire or the Serengeti instead. Lake Manyara is at its best for those who enjoy variety, forest scenery and birds, and who don’t mind a slower pace.

Lake Manyara National Park: common questions
Do lions really climb trees at Lake Manyara?
Sometimes, yes. Lake Manyara has long been known for tree-climbing lions, and they're most often seen resting in the branches of acacia and mahogany trees during the heat of the day. Sightings are not guaranteed, and the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda is generally more reliable.
Is Lake Manyara worth a full day?
For many travellers it's a good half-day stop on the way to Ngorongoro rather than a destination in itself. Birders and those who enjoy a quieter, forested drive should give it a full day.
Are there flamingos at Lake Manyara?
Flamingos come and go depending on water levels and algae. When they're present, they can gather in the thousands along the shoreline. In dry years the lake shrinks and the shoreline moves, so the best views vary.
Can you do a walking or canoe safari here?
Walking safaris and canoeing on the lake are available in some seasons through specific operators and only when water levels allow. Ask your operator in advance, because activity availability changes.
Where does Lake Manyara fit in a northern circuit?
Usually between Tarangire and Ngorongoro. Some itineraries spend a morning there, then continue to a rim lodge at Karatu or Ngorongoro.
