Day by day
Day 1: Nairobi to Amboseli
Leave Nairobi in the morning for a drive of about four to five hours, mostly on paved road, with the last stretch on dirt. If you leave early you can be in Amboseli for a late-afternoon drive. Amboseli is small and flat, and elephants are everywhere you look, often in family groups of twenty or more. Kilimanjaro sits over the border in Tanzania and forms the backdrop.
Day 2: A full day at Amboseli
Go out at sunrise, when the light on the mountain is best and the animals are most active. Head to the swamps in the middle of the park where elephants, buffalo, hippos and huge flocks of birds gather. Return for lunch and a rest, then visit Observation Hill for a view of the whole ecosystem. Evening drives here are good for lions and hyenas, and giraffes, zebras and wildebeest are common.
Day 3: Amboseli to Tsavo West
Drive west and south, about three to four hours depending on your route and the state of the roads. You’ll arrive at Tsavo West in time for lunch and a short drive. This side of Tsavo is scenic, with volcanic hills, lava fields and clear springs.
Day 4: Tsavo West
Visit Mzima Springs, where an underwater viewing chamber lets you see hippos and fish at close range. Walk or drive across the Shetani lava flow, a black landscape left by an eruption a couple of hundred years ago. Rhinos live in a protected sanctuary here, and your guide can explain the visiting arrangements. Rock hyrax, gerenuk and dik-dik are among the smaller animals.
Day 5: Tsavo West to Tsavo East
Cross to the eastern side of Tsavo, about three hours by road. Tsavo East is drier and flatter, with long views across scrubland and the Galana River. The elephants here are famously red. Lions, buffalo, giraffes and Kenya’s rare species such as the lesser kudu are found here. Spend the afternoon on the Galana River road, then settle in for the evening.
Day 6: Tsavo East to Nairobi or the coast
Take a morning game drive, then leave the park at Voi gate. From Voi you can catch the Madaraka Express to Nairobi, which takes roughly four hours and gives a good view of the plains, or drive to the coast. What’s included and what isn’t
Included: accommodation, meals, park fees and a 4x4 with a driver-guide. Not included: international flights, visas, tips, insurance and drinks. Amboseli and Tsavo charge Kenya Wildlife Service fees per person per day, and the amounts change, so we check them when we quote.
Is this trip for you?

Questions about this trip
Will I actually see Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?
Often, but not always. The mountain tends to be clearest in the early morning and late afternoon, and cloud builds through the day. Dry months, especially June to October and January to February, give the best odds. Treat it as a bonus, because the elephants are the main draw.
Why are Tsavo's elephants red?
They throw dust over themselves to cool down and to protect their skin from insects, and the soil in Tsavo is rich in iron oxide, which stains them a rust colour. It washes off in the rain, and elephants at other parks look grey.
Can this trip end at the coast?
Yes. From Tsavo East you can continue by road to Mombasa or by the Madaraka Express train from Voi, then transfer to Diani or Watamu. Check train timetables and book ahead, since the schedule changes.
